After what he thought would be a night well spent with a stranger, Ryger finds himself taken captive by Solara, a self-proclaimed scientist. As the booze and pharmaceuticals wear off, Ryger realizes the restraints he’s in are not purely for play. Solara is on a mission, one that can only be accomplished with the help of Ryger’s immortality.
Solara, the nostalgic scientist, becomes overwhelmed by her drunken and sulking prisoner. Reluctantly, she gets to know her immortal foe and begins to find him only moderately repugnant.
Ryger and Solara pass the time exchanging stories of the past, some more gruesome and graphic than others.
The past appears to be repeating itself as rebellion grows in the city of Cassia. Meanwhile, Solara discovers a change in her immortal specimen.
Ryger’s melodrama is exacerbated by Solara’s life-changing inoculum. Without the monarchy’s medical records, Solara is not able to reverse what she has done to her specimen. Ryger decides to let her in on a little royal secret.
With help from a professional criminal, Solara breaks into the royal medical archives. After a traumatic evening, Solara finds solace from an unusual source, Ryger.
A rebellion is rising against the monarchy, fueled by a devout religious entity known as The Round. Ryger reluctantly confides in Solara about King Drysis’s condition while questioning her motives.
Ryger becomes more suspicious of Solara’s intentions and catches her in a lie. Feelings of betrayal and deceit tarnish their growing connection, and the two are left to fend for themselves.
New voices emerge as Solara unwillingly encounters members of the rebellion, as well as old friends of Ryger’s. Meanwhile, Ryger is haunted by the ghosts of rebellion’s past.
The tables turn for Solara and Ryger as the revolt grows in the city. Solara meets a particularly savage member of The Round whose motives are similar to her own, just slightly more…barbaric. Ryger finds himself on the wrong side of the rebellion.
